Kyrenia, with its picturesque harbour and adjacent castle is understandably called the “Jewel of Cyprus”.
The old town of Famagusta is surrounded by huge , ancient walls and is packed full of remains of ancient churches, Venetian Palaces, and ancinet market stalls.
The present city was most probably built on the site of the ancient city kingdom of Ledra which was rebuilt in about 300 BC by Lefkos the son of Ptolemy Soter and named after him.
The town of Guzelyurt is the largest of any significance to the west of North Cyprus and it is the centre of the citrus growing area.
Lefke was once the centre of the prosperous copper mining industry and there is plenty of evidence from that now long defunct trade.
The Karpaz peninsula stills retains some of the unspoilt charm of old Cyprus and a day trip is not enough to seek out and sample its many delights.
